Materials

As with most hobbies, you will need to invest a certain amount of time, effort and money in order to get started. Material costs for the visual arts can vary greatly depending on your medium of choice. I've created a list of the basic materials and equipment I use to work in the following media:

Sketching

These are the usual materials when I am sketching:

  • Sketch book or paper
  • Graphite Pencils in 2H, B, 2B, 6B, & Ebony (Sanford)
  • Mechanical Pencils .5mm, .7mm (Pentel, TUL)
  • Gel Ink Pens with Fine Tip (TUL)
  • Erasers

Color Rendering

After the initial sketch and ink phase comes color. These are my usual materials when coloring:

  • Colored Pencils (Prismacolor)
  • Markers (Prismacolor)
  • Crayons (Crayola)

Painting

I've dabbled in the following paint media (no particular brands):

  • Acrylic (favorite paint medium, easy to work with)
  • Oil (love the texture, but hate the drying time)
  • Water Color (not a fan, but using salt makes it more fun)

Digital Illustration

My favorite way to create art. My tools are the following:

  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Corel Paint
  • Wacom Graphire Tablet CTE-640

Animation

2D or 3D animation tools I use:

  • Adobe Flash
  • 3D Studio Max
  • After Effects
  • Reference materials:

-video clips

-a mirror (useful for facial animations. No, it's not weird to make faces in the mirror. It's called animating!)

-your own body (Again, the best way to get the feel for an animation is to get up and act it out. If you're sitting still while animating, you're not doing it right!! Get up, move!)
